52 Ancestors: Week 3 Namesake

I am taking part in the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge for 2021. The challenge is organised by Amy Johnson Crow who provides a weekly writing prompt. This week the prompt is Namesake.

I have pondered what, or who, to write about this week, and finally settled on the next generation. Both my sisters have chosen to give their children middle names from our grandparents.

Back in November I wrote about my nephew learning about my grandfather, his great-grandfather. My nephew was given Grandpa’s name, Eric, as his middle name,

As part of “aunt duties” during the current Covid-19 lockdown I am spending some time on Zoom with my nephew and nieces each week, either helping out with school set lessons, or just entertaining them. Today I decided to introduce my nieces to family history and together we filled in a family tree template. As the younger niece has her paternal great-grandmother’s name as her middle name we could fill in one on that side. I have asked them to find out the names of the three missing great-grandparents from their Daddy this week.

The girls seemed to really enjoy seeing pictures of the previous generations, and my elder niece was intrigued by a photo of her, her Mum, her Grandma and her namesake great-grandmother.

4 generations. My grandmother Blanche Elizabeth with her first great-grandchild, the only one she met.
